“A Musical Comes Home“ – A musical with heart has returned to its setting in Salzburg. Maria loves the mountains, singing, and dancing – and dreams of nothing more than becoming a nun. But instead, she is sent to work as a governess for the children of the widowed Captain von Trapp… To mark the 60th anniversary of the world-famous film, the Salzburg Landestheater is once again staging this hit production.

The musical by Richard Rodgers (music), Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse (book) premiered on November 16, 1959, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York. Based on the musical, the 1965 film of the same name starring Julie Andrews was partly filmed at original locations in Salzburg – and has so far reached 1.2 billion viewers worldwide.

The production by Andreas Gergen and Christian Struppeck, with its precise and affectionate direction and refreshingly un-sentimental approach, has exceeded all expectations and long since become a cult classic.
