Lohengrin

Lohengrin - Richard Wagner

Romantic opera in three acts
Text by Richard Wagner
In German with surtitles
A co-production with the Saarländisches Staatstheater

When the young Gottfried suddenly disappears one day, it is his sister Elsa who is accused of having murdered him. As no one believes in her innocence, she faces the worst - until, seemingly out of nowhere, a mysterious savior appears to defend her. Yet this nameless stranger exploits the power vacuum of an unsettled society to establish himself as the source of a new, unquestionable order. In the shadow of the hero’s radiant admiration, humanity begins to fade - especially in Elsa’s case.

Richard Wagner’s monumental opera Lohengrin stands at the threshold of his characteristic music drama, unfolding a gripping pull through its dense interplay of emotion, politics, and mystery. The fragile balance between the work’s charged historical context and its almost fairy-tale-like premise is a key part of its enduring appeal. For the new production in Linz, director Michael Schulz - who has already demonstrated his keen sense for ambivalence with Elektra- takes on this challenge.
