Bullet For My Valentine - Pendulum/Dark Divine
Matt Tuck describes the creation of every Bullet For My Valentine album as a “journey”. Each album, the frontman explains, captures the essence of a particular moment in time – a snapshot of its creators and the world around them. Nothing forced, nothing staged, nothing disingenuous. “Let life and our experiences set the course,” says Tuck with a certain wisdom born of experience.
This is how Bullet For My Valentine has evolved – through an authentic approach to creativity that is difficult to dispute, and for good reason. Three decades into their career, Bullet For My Valentine have established themselves as one of the most successful rock and metal bands the UK has ever produced. From humble beginnings in Bridgend, Wales, they fought their way to the top and became a truly global phenomenon. Millions of albums sold, billions of streams, numerous awards and regular appearances on the biggest stages around the world are, remarkably, only part of the story when it comes to their influence and impact.
The sum of these experiences and achievements is ever-present on “Social Apocalypse”, their eighth studio album. Its ten tracks bring together a lifetime of experiences and inspirations, capturing every facet of the Bullet For My Valentine sound in a masterfully crafted form. Tuck describes the album as being shaped by “light and shade”, while at the same time being “clean and dirty” as well as “intense and cinematic”. “I feel like this will be the ultimate album for Bullet fans, because it brings together sounds and ideas from every chapter of our story while taking them into new territory,” he says.
“Social Apocalypse” exudes a sense of confidence that is deeply embedded in its DNA. The early stages of the album’s six-year creation were shaped by the conflicting emotions of personal struggles, followed by the overwhelming celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the iconic debut album “The Poison”, during which the band played the biggest shows of their career. Yet the longest wait ever for a Bullet album was also the result of a realization that good things come to those who wait.
Thematically, “Social Apocalypse” combines the unflinching lyrical introspection of people shaped and worn down by the modern world with keen observations of a planet that seems to be coming off the rails at every turn. On the title track, “Social Apocalypse”, Tuck rails against “the end of the world as we know it, when all hope has faded”. In “Read Between The Lines”, he spits out the line: “We can’t call this living, we’re barely existing.” “I Don’t Trust Tomorrow”, meanwhile, declares: “No hope, no plan, no future.”
