Director Sven-Eric Bechtolf and set designer Rolf Glittenberg move the action to around 1930 in order to show the characters in the opera as multi-dimensional characters.

Strauss' transparent score, inspired by Mozart's “Idomeneo“, combines lyrical depth with themes from South Slavic folk songs, creating a musical experience of special beauty. “Arabella“ is the last work together by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal and celebrates the unconditional belief in love between two people who belong together - despite all adversities.
