When Yuja Wang performs, the ice quickly melts – hardly anyone can resist her sparkling musicality, technical brilliance, and warm stage presence. It is therefore fitting that the internationally acclaimed pianist also lends her popularity to compositions that don't receive the recognition they deserve in the international concert circuit. On March 21, as soloist with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, she will champion a rarely performed piano concerto from the far north at the Musikverein. It is by Einojuhani Rautavaara, arguably Finland's most important composer after Sibelius, and is characterized by an expressive richness that perfectly complements Wang's versatility. Under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, the artist will also perform familiar works; Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand is the second piece she will explore in this concert. The two works are framed by pieces that expand the Finnish and French soundscapes respectively: Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony and Debussy’s “La Mer”.
