Selbstbezichtigung

Peter Handke's 1966 play Self-Accusation represents, in a sense, a complementary counterpart to the preceding Offending the Audience: the audience is not attacked, but rather elevated to the highest authority, as if it were a court or a god. “Postulates, principles, labels, statutes, general opinions, and formulas“ (Peter Handke) constitute precepts whose violation seems unavoidable. Following the motto “Whoever lives, disturbs,“ the text demonstrates the flaws that accompany every life path. Where Handke attempts to avoid attributing culpable behavior to personal weaknesses, Dušan David Pařízek takes the opposite approach: he makes the impersonal personal again. After its premiere at Volx/Margareten in 2015 and its subsequent transfer to the Berliner Ensemble, this successful production now returns to Vienna.
