Salome at Volksoper Wien
With “Salome”, Volksoper Wien presents a gripping music drama by Richard Strauss – a work of immense intensity, psychological sharpness, and powerful musical force. Between desire, power, obsession, and destruction, this opera unfolds into an evening of music theatre that holds the audience captive from beginning to end.
At the centre of the story is Salome, who has grown weary of the decadence and moral corruption of the world around her. She becomes fascinated by the prophet Jochanaan, who is being held captive in a cistern by her stepfather Herodes. In Jochanaan’s purity and uncompromising severity, she sees a stark contrast to the depraved court she lives in. But fascination soon turns into obsession: when Jochanaan rejects her, Salome’s desire grows into dangerous ecstasy. When the despised Herodes promises her anything she wishes in exchange for a dance, she demands the ultimate and horrifying prize – the head of the prophet.
“Salome” is one of the most compelling works in the operatic repertoire. Richard Strauss combines sonic brilliance with psychological precision, creating a music drama that is as disturbing as it is captivating. The tension builds relentlessly, drawing the audience deep into the dark extremes of human desire and power.
At Volksoper Wien, audiences can experience Luc Bondy’s legendary production – a true directing classic that has received international acclaim since its celebrated premiere. This timeless staging makes “Salome” an opera experience of extraordinary intensity and dramatic power.
Performed in German with German and English surtitles, it offers a powerful and unforgettable evening for both local and international audiences.
