Two violins solo
Renaud Capuçon and Daniel Lozakovich present a programme exclusively for violin duos: the instrumentation of the two instruments without accompaniment was established in late Baroque France and only became more popular again in the early 20th century. The music of this extraordinary evening of chamber music also covers this period, beginning with the Sonata in E minor op. 3/5 (1730) by Jean-Marie Leclair, who poured French elegance into Italian sonata form. This is followed by Sergei Prokofiev's modern Sonata in C major op. 56 (1932) and Henri Wieniawski's Eight Etudes-caprices op. 18 (1863): Here, technical brilliance and romantic expressiveness are on an equal footing. The programme concludes with Eugène Ysaÿe's passionate Sonata in A minor (1915), which was long overshadowed by the six sonatas for solo violin. However, the dedicatee is very well known: the composer had a close friendship with Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, after whom the renowned competition is named.
