Oper Köln - Die Zauberflöte
21.09.2025 - 27.09.2025 | Oper Köln - Staaten Haus Saal 1
The sun's rays drive away the night!“: Mozart's grand opera in the guise of a Singspiel, “The Magic Flute,“ is back on the Cologne Opera's program in Michael Hampe's production. The composer Mozart possessed an inimitable ability to imbue the colorful plot with a higher musical meaning: Papageno's folk-song-like arias (“I am the bird catcher“) stand alongside the sublime choral scenes (“Strength prevailed“), and never has an aria sounded sadder and more hopeless than that of Pamina, who believes she has been abandoned by her lover (“Ach ich fühl's, es ist verschwunden“). The magical effect of music lies at the heart of the actual message: The instruments of the Magic Flute and the glockenspiel symbolize the power of music to change the world and to work miracles even when society is going through a time of crisis. In the contrasts of the realm of the sun and the world of night, of fire and water, of vengeance (Queen of the Night) and reason (Sarastro and the priesthood), of virtuous characters (Tamino, Pamina) and cheerful, folksy characters (Papageno, Papagena), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last opera is a great fairy tale for young and old!
