The cradle of European polyphony
»Our Lady«, as the Mother of God and Virgin Mary is also called, has many faces. She is the One for All and one of her most majestic patron saints is a landmark of the French capital: Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, one of the oldest Gothic churches in the country, was also the cradle of the »organum«, an early form of polyphony, during the first half of its approximately 180-year construction period. Performances of this remote music are extremely rare due to the high demands it places on the performers. Only one such organum – was heard from Master Perotin and not a single note from his predecessor, Master Leonin! – in the Vienna Konzerthaus. Until 18 January, when Paul Van Nevel will once again write music and interpretation history here.
