Christmas music and texts
Shepherds at the cot: as representatives of the common people who are the first to hear the joyful news of Jesus' birth, they not only appear in nocturnal Baroque paintings or as imaginative nativity figures. They also found their way into music in the form of so-called pastorals. In Rome, the so-called pifferari, shepherds who play music, traditionally came down from the mountains at Christmas time to play bagpipes or other wind instruments.
The pastoral
In pastorals, music of a sweet or cheerful character, these instruments are used or the drone pipes of the bagpipes are played. Dorothee Oberlinger and her Ensemble 1700, Li Piffari e le Muse and soprano Dorothee Mields present a programme based on the tradition of the pifferari. The programme will not only feature Christmas music by Arcangelo Corelli, George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonio Vivaldi, but Matthias Brandt will also read appropriate texts.
