Der Opernball at Volksoper Wien
With “Der Opernball”, Volksoper Wien presents a sparkling operetta by Richard Heuberger, full of wit, charm, romance, and elegant confusion. Set in the sophisticated world of the Belle Époque, this delightful production combines playful intrigue, stylish humour, and enchanting music in a classic operetta experience.
Georges and Marguérite decide to add a little excitement to their marriage and invite the newly engaged couple Paul and Angèle to their Paris apartment. Marguérite persuades Angèle to stage a loyalty test involving a partner swap: both women send their men identical invitations to a secret rendezvous with a mysterious “pink domino” at the opera ball. The discreet maid Hortense delivers the letters – but cleverly sends a third identical invitation to Angèle’s sister Henriette. And if that were not enough, there is still the question of where Uncle Theophil has disappeared to. What follows is a lively operetta full of mistaken identities, flirtation, and unexpected twists.
When Richard Heuberger premiered “Der Opernball” in 1898, he set out to refresh the operetta genre with elegance, refinement, and stronger musical drama. The result is a light yet sophisticated work, filled with graceful melodies and clever musical details, including recurring motifs such as the fateful “pink domino” that runs through the score.
At Volksoper Wien, this charming classic is brought to life in a stylish production that keeps the story in the Paris of the Belle Époque while exploring the hidden cracks beneath the surface of seemingly perfect bourgeois married life. Performed in German with German and English surtitles, it offers a wonderful evening of operetta for both local and international audiences.
