Carmen
05.06.2027 - 10.07.2027 | Landestheater Tirol - Großes Haus
Her name has become synonymous with a fiery temperament, Mediterranean passion, and an uncompromising thirst for freedom: with Carmen , we turn our attention to one of the repertoire’s most beloved operas, a work that has lost none of its elemental intensity to this day.
While Carmen the Bohémienne uncompromisingly asserts her right to self-determination, the desire felt by the ordinary soldier Don José escalates into a murderous obsession. Electrified by Carmen’s charisma, he falls increasingly under her spell; he deserts the army and abandons everything to follow her - only to kill her in the end, driven by possessiveness and the fear of losing control.
While the libretto sharpens the dramatic stakes for the characters, Bizet’s score unfolds a dazzling richness of expression, ranging from Eros to the abyss, from lightness to existential crisis. The music deftly shifts between genres and styles, generating a compelling, magnetic pull. The 1875 Paris premiere sparked a scandal before the opera achieved legendary status and began its triumphant journey across the world’s stages.
Armin Petras - director and designated Artistic Director of Theater Bremen - makes his debut at the Tiroler Landestheater with this work, a story of reckless courage, a burning will to live, an absolute yearning for freedom, and sexual self-determination. His production portrays Carmen as a champion of freedom who refuses to submit to the labels imposed by a restrictive society and who exerts her irresistible allure precisely because of this defiance. Carmen becomes the embodiment of a promise of liberation—and a mirror held up to a world incapable of handling such freedom.
